Bushwalking

By Joe Collins // 29 June 2010

Bushwalking is simply defined as: an expedition on foot through the bush.  If you are not familiar with Australia, you may be asking yourself “What is the bush?” Simply stated, the bush is an area of dense forestation and undergrowth much like the forests, thickets, and hollows in the United States.

Depending upon your country of origin, you may have a different term for this activity.  New Zealanders call this activity tramping, Americans call it hiking, and people who climb the Himalayan Mountains call this activity trekking.

Bushwalking is one of the greatest ways to see Australian wildlife.  As you make your way through the bush, you will have the opportunity to see an amazing array of wildlife unique to Australia.  Stop and listen to the Kookaburra sing from atop the gumtrees.

If your bushwalk takes you along the coastline, stop to have a look at the unique rock pools created by the ocean waves crashing upon the shore. These pockets have become the home to many sea creatures like starfish, snails, and sea anemones.
