Monday 

Catch a movie! Palace Norton Street, located at 99 Norton Street, Leichhardt, above one of the city’s best eat-streets and with tickets only $10.50 on Mondays, usually $18, you can make a night of it! 

Karaoke Baby! Head over to Karaoke World, at 185 Elizabeth Street, and receive an hour free when you book for two hours or more. Just make sure you get in before 9pm.

For a cheap meal, head over to Bar Broadway (2 Broadway, Broadway). Buy a drink and pay $5 for a stir-fry from the in-house Thai Lanna restaurant.

The generous servings of fish and chips for $7 at the Lord Roberts Hotel, on the corner of Riley and Stanley streets, in East Sydney, is something you wont want to miss! To make it even better, Happy Hour is between 4-6pm, with $3.50 local schooners and $4 wine.

Grab $15 rush tickets to 7pm performances at Griffin Theatre Company at SBW Stables Theatre, at 10 Nimrod Street, Kings Cross. All you have to do is arrive an hour before the show to try for the cheap seats – no guarantee but at that price its worth the risk.

As things get colder, we all start to bundle up here in Sydney. Hop on the cider bandwagon to get some warmth from the inside. At the fireplace-filled Porterhouse Irish Pub, located at 233 Riley Street, Surry Hills, you can enjoy $5 pints of Bulmers all day. Get dinner and receive 20% off your meal!

 

Tuesday is Movie Night!

Grab a beer, a famed laksa and show at the Old Fitzroy Theatre, at 129 Dowling Street, in Woolloomooloo, for $29. 

There’s much to love about the refurbished Norfolk Hotel (305 Cleveland Street, Surry Hills). Happy Hour begins at 4pm and goes until 6pm in the kitsch Mexican bar. Eat $3 soft-shell tacos all night!

At Dendy Opera Quays, located at 2 East Circular Quay, you can see all 3D films for just $10.50! 

Cocktails and a Movie anyone? Grab a few mates and head over to the Arthouse Hotel (275 Pitt Street, CBD) for two-for-one cocktails in the Gallery Bar between 5-8pm. Afterwards, head over to the George Street Cinemas a five minutes’ walk, to catch an $11 flick. 

Looking for a more relaxed environment to enjoy a movie without the hassle? Govinda’s movie room, located at 112 Darlinghurst Road, Darlinghurst, offers recent films at 7.30pm or 9.30pm for only $10. 

If cheap is what your looking for, Ritz Cinema (45 St Pauls Street, Randwick) is for you! Just $8 to any session. 

Do you have a car? If so, this is the movie deal for you! Get a little old-school at Sydney’s own Greater Union Blacktown Drive-in. Located on Cricketers Arms Road, in Blacktown. You can see two flicks for $10 without leaving the comfort of your car. 

The Hornsby Odeon Cinema, at 155 Pacific Highway, Hornsby, is a steal, with all sessions $7 and 3D films for $10.

Get your bowl on at Kingpin Bowling Darling Harbour! Strike a great deal, with $16 games after 6pm Sunday to Thursday! If thats not good enough, start a little earlier with $14 games from 10am to 6pm. You can also play a game of Laser Skirmish for $12pp, everyday of the week.

 

Wednesday

See a flick with a difference, every fortnight at the Marginalised Movies night at Mu Meson, on the corner of Parramatta Road and Trafalgar Street, in Annandale. For $10 see entertaining, bizarre films pulled from their huge cult and classic cinema library. Entry at 7.30pm for an 8pm start. 

Art After Hours is a great way to see the Art Gallery of NSW (Art Gallery Road, The Domain) for free! Between 5-9pm the Gallery is open for exhibitions, talks, films and even live music!

If you have some time around lunch, the University Art Gallery and the Macleay and Nicholson museums, located at the University of Sydney, in Camperdown hosts lunchtime talks most every Wednesday.

The Macquarie Hotel, located at 42 Wentworth Avenue, Surry Hills, has World Music Wednesdays starting at 8.30pm.

Get over hump day with a barbecue at World Square Pub! (680 George Street) To sweeten the deal, from 4 to 7pm, get $3 local beers and $5 basic spirits.

Indie-oriented bands often play free at the Beach Road Hotel, located at 71 Beach Road, Bondi Beach. Not too long ago, Beach Road was host to Cabins and Wolf & Cub, as well as international groups such as Scotland’s Frightened Rabbit.

Do you want to feel the blues and get a little soulful with some jazz music? 505 (280 Cleveland Street, Surry Hills) offers great music, at a good price anytime after 7.30pm, with midweek gigs, Sunday to Wednesday at just $10!

Thursday 

Dive into the enchanted-forest beer garden at The Rose Hotel off the corner of Cleveland and Shepherd streets, Chippendale, for two-for-one cocktails between 6-8pm.

Looking for some social entertainment? Head over to Strike Bowling at the Entertainment Quarter in Moore Park, and enjoy unlimited tenpin, karaoke, and pool for $20, after 5pm.

Spend your lunch break at the Metcalfe Auditorium in the grand State Library of NSW, located on Macquarie Street in the CBD, and see a free documentary or film at 12.10pm.

This might just be Sydney’s cheapest beer! Charlie Chans (631-635 George Street, CBD) pours $2.50 local ales from 6-7pm.

Friday

Looking for a bit of adventure after a long week? It’s game on at Friday Night Lunacy at Luna Park (1 Olympic Drive, Milsons Point). Enjoy unlimited rides after 5pm for just $30.

With six bands spread out across several levels, you will never be bored! Head to indie-rock-oriented night Mum at the World Bar, located at 24 Bayswater Road, Kings Cross, for a great night. Its only $10 if you arrive before 10pm. 

The Shakespeare Hotel, at 200 Devonshire Street, in Surry Hills, has a happy hour worth getting an early start for. Get beers for $2.90 and $3.50 spirits from 3 to 6pm. This is also one of the best pub feeds around, with $12.50 gigantic mains. 

It’s hard to find a good margarita this far south of Mexico, but the Norfolk Hotel knows where it at, mixing up excellent $10 ones (and $5 tequila shots) from 6-8pm.

The Wharf Sessions at Sydney Theatre Co on Pier 4, Hickson Road, Walsh Bay, offers live music for free. This is a free monthly event, starting at 10pm.

Looking for a cheap drink? Happy Hour at Verandah Bar, located at 55-65 Elizabeth Street, in the City serves $5 Coronas and champagne cocktails from 5-9pm.

Grab a few mates and a comfy seat for a relaxing night at Corridor, located at 153a King Street, Newtown. Enjoy a great night with friends and $9 fruit mojitos from 5-7pm.

Looking for a great night complete with laugher, excellent food and great dancing? Sydney’s Comedy Cruise has all this AND you enjoy it on a 3.5 hour Harbour Cruise! Enjoy a 3 course meal, comedy show and Party DJ, all for just $69 a ticket. 

Make your way over to the Crows Nest Hotel for I Love Fridays at the Crowie! Grab yourself a $5 sol beer, or a $10 cocktail jug from 5 to 8pm. Get there a little earlier in the day and enjoy a $10 lunch.

Need a dose of Irish? P.J. O’Brien’s, Sydneys Irish Pub serves $5 beers and spirits. I have been told, there is free food for those who arrive early. 

Looking for a relaxed place to chill with some mates? Cheers Bar offers $3.50 drink specials from 9pm. Shoot a game of pool for $1 before 5pm, and dance the night away! Sports shown all day, everyday.

 

Saturday

Head to the Freaky Tiki (174 King Street, Newtown, 9517 3051) for a little Island Paradise! Get $3.50 local schooners (including cider) from 4-7pm and $5 dumplings from noon-7pm.

The Lansdowne Hotel, located on the corner of City Road and Broadway is a great spot for free, live indie rock. Expect everything from punk rock to electro-pop, starting at 8pm.

Join a tour and talk relating to current exhibitions at Museum of Contemporary Art (140 George Street, The Rocks) Available for free on most Saturdays. 

Students can get cheap tickets to 2pm shows at Belvoir Street Theatre, located at 25 Belvoir Street, in Surry Hills. Tickets are only $27, half the normal price. Cheap tickets are limited and up for grabs starting at 9.30am. 

The only thing better than discounted drinks, is when the drinks come with food. Happy hour at MUMU Grill, at 70 Alexander Street, in Crows Nest, is from 5.30-6.30pm and includes free tapas, which will pair well with a $5 beer/wine, or a $10 cocktail.

In search of a good laugh? Live Stand Up Comedy at Star Bar 600 George Street, in the Sydney CBD, offers shows for $12for General Seating, VIP $15, Dinner $28.

Sunday

Soothe the brain with $10 Bloody Marys in the astro-turf patio at Darlo Bar, located at 306 Liverpool Street, Darlinghurst. 

Make your way over to Campbells Cove and catch Vivid’s final few FireDance flame shows. The shows start at 7pm, each featuring 40 flame projectors.

Kick off your shoes and hit the green for a round of barefoot bowls at Paddington Bowling Club (2 Quarry Street, Paddington). For $12 a person, it’s a bargain! With three bowling sessions – 11am-2pm, 2-5pm, 5-8pm – and instructors on hand, you are sure to have a great time!

Free films in the theatrette at 2pm on the first Sunday of each month at gallery White Rabbit, located at 30 Balfour Street, Chippendale. This building houses one of the world’s largest collections of contemporary Chinese art. Expect everything from kung-fu flicks to traditional romances. There is also a tranquil teahouse and handmade dumplings, with free entry to the Gallery.

Take advantage of the family Sunday Fun Day bus/train/ferry unlimited travel ticket (adult $2.50) and head over to Darling Harbour to visit the National Maritime Museum. Museum entry is free, with hours between 9.30am and 5pm.

Trade the couch for the Town Hall Hotel, on the corner of Montague and Darling streets, in Balmain, and watch NRL games on the big screen with $3 local schooners and $4 wines from 1-6pm, or sip $9 cocktails in the Balcony Bar from 1-10pm.

Weekend

Many markets are open on the weekends, particularly on Sunday. These markets have everything from food to clothing, crafts to street performers. Do as the locals do – head down to one of these great markets for a cheap lunch and inexpensive shopping. 

Sport is a very popular weekend activity in Australia. Throughout the seasons many games come to Sydney, providing the chance to experience a different side of Australian culture. Sydney’s ANZ Stadium hosts 5 of Australia’s professional sports – Rugby League, Rugby Union, Australian Rules, Football and Cricket. Student tickets are offered at a discount.
