Cradle Mountain National Park

Tell a Friend

Cradle Mountain National Park is home to a variety of wilderness experiences. One of Tasmania’s 19 national parks, part of the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage area, and one of the most popular places to visit in Tasmania,  this is a stop you wont want to miss.

The combination of past glacial activity, flora, fauna, and historic sites have created a park that is sure to impress you with its beauty. Complete with jagged mountain ridges, ancient rainforests, glacial lakes, and deciduous beech the National Park provides a range of environments to explore.

If bushwalking is your fancy, Cradle is the starting point of the world-famous Overland Track, a 6-day walk through magnificent mountain terrain. All Trackers must check in at the Overland Track check-in counter located in the Visitor Centre. If your schedule doesn’t allow a full weeks stay, there are many day walks and short walks available.

Just inside the park is the Cradle Mountain Visitor Center, open daily from 8:30am to 4:30pm, which provides many services: informative displays, art gallery, and videos.

Cradle Valley contains many Aboriginal living sites. Their presence in the Valley can be traced back 10,000 years. Throughout the park are archaeological sites that showcase the history of the land and the people.

Be sure to visit the Waldheim Chalet, which will take you back in time to the early days of Cradle Valley. If camping isn’t quite your thing, but you would like to extend your visit, the park has 8 cabins. The Waldheim Cabins are complete with gas heating, kitchen, bunk beds, shared toilet and shower facilities.

The park provides many facilities for picnics, with barbeques located next to the Visitors Centre. Toilets are available, as well as a public telephone (there is no mobile telephone service). If you are planning to camp, a limited amount of grocery items can be purchased from the campground shop. Other supplies are also sold in the Park Shop, in the Visitor Centre.

Currently park passes must be purchased to enter the site, click here for full details.
