Can I drive in Australia?

Tell a Friend

Yes, but be careful! Before you get behind the wheel of a vehicle it is essential that you know the Australian rules of the road! International visitors are at a higher risk than most drivers because of their unfamiliarity with the area and the road procedure. It is a good idea to bring a passenger along to have two eyes on the road, especially if you are used to driving on the other side of the road.

When driving in Australia you must always carry your drivers license. If your license is not written in English, you must carry an English translation or an International Driving Permit. An International Driving Permit must be presented along with your license. You need both documents to be able to drive.

Also be aware that when travelling from one state to another, road rules may change so be sure to look up the rules for that state before entering it.

A seatbelt must always be worn and you are not permitted to drive while on a mobile device

Driving while intoxicated with alcohol is illegal and very dangerous. Always have a designated sober driver or call a cab to take you home, it is worth a few extra bucks to make it home alive. Do NOT get behind the wheel of a vehicle after you have been drinking!
