$20 dollars We know what you’re thinking

You can’t do much with 20 bucks these days — especially in Sydney! Well, we’ve set out to prove you wrong. Combine a little imagination with a few ideas we’ve suggested, then you’ll find there’s heaps to do. All you need is $20 and energy to get off the couch.

LESS THAN $20

Combine history, education and exercise in one of the many guided or unguided walking tours around Sydney. From scenic strolls to criminal history and architecture they’ll keep you on your toes.?

Take advantage of the great ex-2000 Olympic facilities at Homebush Bay. Take the Rivercat from Circular Quay then the bus from Homebush Bay Wharf.  

Summer and warmer water are fast approaching. Head one of the many local surf schools and hire a surfboard and wetsuit for about $20 for two hours.?

Ride to the top of the AMP Centrepoint Tower for outstanding views of the city and the Blue Mountains. Tickets from the Podium Level at Centrepoint Shopping Centre.?

Get a DayTripper bus/ rail/ ferry ticket and travel anywhere you want within the Sydney suburban area until 4am. ?

Take a tour of the Sydney Opera House and learn all the inside secrets.

General entrance to the Taronga Zoo — if you have a YHA or student card you get a discount

Take a Harbour Cruise with Sydney Ferries, A one hour morning cruise or a 90 minute evening cruise. Cruises leave from Wharf 4 at Circular Quay

For a different view of Sydney, try a ferry cruise in Royal National Park. The cruise leaves from Cronulla.

Check out the National Maritime Museum. Ticket prices vary, but $20 will get you in to see all the galleries, warships and 3 of the vessels. International students pay less. The museum is open most days of the year from 9 - 9.?

Starting late November, go to Moonlight Cinema in Centennial Park. Tickets to see great films in the park (bring a blanket and a picnic) cost about $15 and are available at 7:30 from the Oxford St entrance.

AROUND $10?

Head to Centennial Park for an afternoon of rollerblading. The park has kilometres of paved paths — perfect for a few laps. Rollerblade hire near the park costs about $10 an hour.?• The Powerhouse Museum in Ultimo is known for it’s great interactive exhibits.

The Museum of Sydney on Bridge Street features the history of the city since 1788.

Have a truly “spaced out evening” at the Sydney Observatory in The Rocks. Night tours (bookings essential) Ring 9217 0485 to book.

LESS THAN $5?

Not up for climbing the Sydney Harbour Bridge? The bridge lookout is a good alternative.

The Cumberland Street entrance is open 10 - 5 daily.?

Learn all about snakes and lizards from the Snake Man of La Perouse. See him Sundays from 11 - 4 at La Perouse Park — in the same place his family has been showing snakes since 1919. The snake man passes a hat after each 30 minute show so bring some change.?

Want a swim at the beach without all the sand? Wylies Baths at Coogee are open 356 days a year from 7 - 7.

Visit the Garden of Friendship and have tea in the Tea House Courtyard at the Chinese Garden, Darling Harbour.?

Do one of the beautiful coastal walks. Free any day of the year.

So there you have it. Lots to do for less than twenty bucks.
