iconGetting around on Public Transport

The best way to get around Sydney is by its excellent public transport system and an OPAL Card. You now can’t use public transport in Sydney without one, even if only here for a day or two. The card gives you unlimited travel on all trains, buses, light rail and ferries. You will also be able to travel west to the Blue Mountains, north to Newcastle and south to Kiama or Woollongong. Buy from any Transport Shop or convenience store with an OPAL sign, or online at opal.com.au

Buses

Some of the best places to visit include Palm Beach and Manly, north of the Harbour Bridge, Watsons Bay and Bondi Beach to the east and Balmain and Parramatta to the west.

Ferries

The majority of ferries operate from Circular Quay. You can also reach Balmain, Manly and Watsons Bay via ferry.

Rail

There are a number of different lines into the City. The main railway stations are Central, Town Hall and Wynyard. Use the railway map opposite to see which line you require. Trains run regularly and are clean, safe and efficient.

Intercity Buses

Want to see Australia but don’t feel like renting a car to get from point A to point B? Your other options are to fly or consider taking a long-distance bus, or coach, from city to city. Bus options include going via Australia’s Federal Capital Canberra to Melbourne, or driving up the Stuart Highway from Adelaide to Darwin. There are many other popular routes. Drop into Sydney Coach Terminal (02 9281 9366) for more information. They sell tickets for Greyhound, Murray’s, Firefly, Premier and Port Stephen’s Coaches.

Alternatively if you are young or young at heart you can travel with Oz Experience (1300 300 028). This is a a hop-on / hop-off service and allows for a travel experience that is completely made up by you. In just a few weeks you’ll be able to see more of Australia than you ever thought possible. Certainly more than you will by flying!
