How to Make a Call!

First choose your means of calling. Once you have decided and have a phone in hand you are ready to dial!

International:

First, dial the international access code (0011) then, the country code (full country list), then the area code, and phone number.

Domestic:

To make a call within Australia, dial the area code and the phone number. These numbers vary by region, (02) for ACT and NSW, (03) for VIC and TAS, (07) for QLD, and (08) for SA, WA, and NT.

Calling Australia:

For your family and friends back home, or when organizing accommodation and tours before your arrival, here is the need-to-know on calling Australia from overseas.

First you must dial the international access code (this will vary depending on where you are calling from), then dial Australia’s country code (61) followed by the area code, minus the first zero, and then dial the desired number. (Ex. when calling The WORD from abroad, +61 2 8338 0842)

Calling Options:

Prepaid Telephone Cards:

These are a great way to make your international calls! Available in increments of $5, $10, $20, and $50, these cards can be bought from newsagents, post offices, and convenience stores.

Mobile Phones:

While many phones can be used in Australia after buying a new SIM card, it is best to check before you arrive. If your cell phone is not compatible, the local phone companies offer may affordable options for buying a mobile in Australia.

Public Phones:

Australia also has quite an extensive network of public phones. Easily recognizable, by their orange and blue Telestra emblem. Local calls are normally $0.50 (AUD). Sundays are a great day to make your interstate and international calls because of the all day discount rates!

Internet Access (Skype):

If you are living in an area with internet access, or you have access to internet cafes, Skype can be an affordable way to communicate. If you are renting, or are in a homestay, be sure to check your internet plan before turning on your camera! While voice chatting is cheap, using the camera can result in high fees.
