BEACH DAYS, HARBOUR SIGHTS, CITY NIGHTS

Newcastle is the second-largest city in New South Wales, so it’s no question that you’ll find a lot to do here.  It’s most famous for its beaches, its working harbour and historic landmarks; at night, the city’s restaurants, bars and outdoor cafes all contribute to a growing food scene.  Its cosmopolitan feel, with over 30 museums and art galleries, is a far cry from its outdated reputation as a dirty industrial town, though coal is still its largest exported resource. Watching performances at the Art Deco Civic Theatre and heading to the variety of events and festivals that happen throughout the year only further prove the point that Newcastle is a city worth seeing.

BEACHES AND OCEAN BATHS

Newcastle has become a thriving city with a lot to do, but its main attraction is still its array of first-class beaches and surf spots. From the waves in the harbour located in the north to the wave peaks of Nobbys Reef and Caves Beach, this city takes its beaches and surfing seriously. One of Australia’s biggest surfing events, the Vodafone Surfest, is held in Newcastle during the month of March, and many surfing pros have come from the city.

Ocean baths are just as popular.  Man-made containments of ocean water, ocean baths are popular for swimming and relaxation, and the Merewether Baths, the largest sea baths in the Southern Hemisphere, are a perfect way to experience these baths for yourself.  Another bath, the Bogey Hole, is New South Wales’ oldest, built by convicts in 1819, and is best experienced when the waves are at their most active.  Remember, however, that you aren’t the only one who wants to go for a swim - these ocean baths become very crowded during the summer months.

THINGS TO SEE AND DO

OCEAN BATHING

Definitely check out both the Bogey Hole and the Merewether Ocean Baths; the water is fantastic, and the experience is just as good. The Bogey Hole is the older but more exciting of the two; this ocean rock pool was carved out of a cliff face.

NEWCASTLE REGION ART GALLERY

One of the best art galleries in all of regional Australia, the gallery’s collection of around five thousand works easily rivals any other collection throughout the country.  The gallery is free to view, which makes it even more of an attractive activity.

SOMEWHERE TO STAY

If you’re only planning on spending the day in Newcastle, it is easily accessible from Sydney by CityRail, but there are many places to stay in Newcastle as well, including a YHA hostel located in a restored heritage building right near Newcastle Beach.  You may want to consider spending more than just the day in Newcastle; it is a good place to stay when travelling around the Hunter Valley region as well.
