HOP ON BOARD THE EXPLORER WAY

Known as the Explorer's Way, and “The Track,” the Stuart Highway spans 3,200 kilometres, stretching from Port Augusta to Darwin. Named after John McDouall Stuart, who discovered the route in the 1850s and 60s.

This is the best way to go when travelling between Adelaide and Darwin. It is a great way to see the country and experience the Outback, but is also a very long drive, so be sure to be prepared and plan lots of stops along the way!

As you follow the road you will pass through, Woomera, Coober Pedy, Alice Springs, and Katherine all fantastic places to spend a few days exploring.

The Oodnadatta Track is a dirt road through the outback for the more adventurous, be sure to have a properly equipped vehicle. The track leads back to the Stuart Highway at several points, but may be closed after rain.

Driving Tips:

  • Always carry extra water and food! While the road is well travelled dehydration occurs quickly.
  • Take frequent breaks. The long straight road can be mesmerising and single car accidents are common.
  • Road trains hauling 3 or 4 trailers travel the road by night and day, take extra care overtaking these.
  • The Northern Territory Government has a 130kph speed limit on their highways.
  • The .05 blood alcohol limit is strictly enforced even in this remote area.
