Opal Capital of the World

Opal was first found in Coober Pedy in February 1915. Since then, the town has been supplying the world with the majority of its opal. However, the town is best known for its underground living, with authentic underground homes, museums, opal shops, art galleries, churches and, opal mines just waiting for you to explore them.

SPORT:

This is a great place to do a bit of sporting - BMX, golf hiking, noodling, shooting, AFL, cricket, speedway and swimming are just a few of the sports you can watch and/or take part in during your stay.

BREAKAWAYS:

One of Outback South Australia’s best kept secrets! Just 33km north of Coober Pedy, these magnificent land forms over 70 million years old, were once covered by an inland sea. Today they are home to fauna, flora, and breathtaking views. If you can, stay in the area long enough to see the sunset - you wont want to miss it.

JOSEPHINE'S GALLERY & KANGAROO ORPHANAGE

Enjoy SA’s largest regional Aboriginal Art Gallery. There also is an opal showroom with opal from the major Australian opal fields, including Coober Pedy. You can also take an underground tour of the opal mine and museum, hidden below. The Kangaroo Orphanage allows you to meet baby kangaroos at 12.30pm and 5pm). Learn about Astralia’s favourte animal, the Big Red Kangaroo.

 

SOMEWHERE TO STAY:

During your stay you can choose from a range of underground accommodation. If you would prefer to stay above ground have a look through though the motels, a few of which specialize in backpacker accommodation
