Enjoy the 94,908 hectares of one of South Australia's most popular tourist destinations. Aboriginal rock art sites, impressive fossil remains, and ruins of early European settlement can keep you entertained and amazed for days. See the mountain scenery, timbered gorges, and plentiful wildlife as you explore the park.
To learn a bit about the European heritage make your way over to the old Appealinna copper mine and Wilpena mine, or go for a walk on the Brachina Gorge Geological Trail, located off the Wilpena-Blinman Road, the trail features interpretive maps.
If you’re lucky, you may even spot a Yellow-footed Rock-wallaby. In the past drive alomst to extinction, the Yellow-footed Rock-wallaby is now often seen in Brachina, Wilkawillina, and Bunyeroo gorges, and around the edge of Wilpena Pound. Man other wildlife species live in the area. Keep your eyes open, because you never know what you might see!
The parks major attraction are the Edeowie and Brachina Gorges, Aroona and Bunyeroo valleys, and the Wilpena Pound. All which are worth a good amount of time to fully enjoy. This is a park that you could easily spend days exploring and never see it all.
THINGS TO SEE & DO
GO BUSHWALKING
Take to one of the many walking trails, and explore the Flinder Ranges! The Heysen Trail, which extends for 1200 kilometres from Cape Jervis in the south to Parachilna Gorge in the Flinders is one of the worlds great long distance walking trails. Designed to cater for both serious backpackers going the full distance and day walkers doing short pieces, the trail is sure to please. Marked with red and white markers, it is accessible from Wilpena, Aroona, Trezona, Yanyanna, Parachilna and Black Gap, but is closed during summer between 1 December and 31 March and on days of total fire ban.
SOMEWHERE TO STAY
Camping is the way to go, with over a dozen campground exist within the park. The Wilpena Pound Resort, Rawnsley Park Station, Willow Springs Station, and the Gum Creek Station are also available for those interested in more luxury accommodation.
