You cant leave the Finders Ranges without a visit to the region most famous rock formation: the Wilpena Pound. This spectacular landform can be best appreciated along one of the many established bushwalking trails.
The Wilpena Pound, 17km long, 8km wide and covering 100km, is the remnant valley floor of an ancient range of mountains that has been eroding away for millions of years forming natural amphitheatre.
Emus, kangaroos, bird life, and the threatened yellow footed rock wallaby are plentiful in this area and can often be seen when walking about the area.
Be sure to leave enough in time to visit the areas highlights. Climb to the top of St. Mary’s Peak, the highest mountain in the Flinders Ranges National Park and the second highest in South Australia. At 1171 metres St. Mary's is just on the North-East edge of the Wilpena Pound offering 360-degree views of the Flinders Ranges, Wilpena Pound, and surrounding plains.
