MELBOURNE'S WEEKEND ESCAPE

Ever since steamboats made their way from Melbourne in the 1870s Mornington Peninsula has been the getaway summer destination of choice for all city-dwellers and tourists alike. From the point where you leave the urban chaos at the town of Frankston, the Peninsula is full of beautiful bay-lined towns and fantastic surf spots. You’ll be able to see Victoria’s first European settlement at the town of Sorrento, with its iconic sandstone buildings and rich millionaires’ mansions. You’ll also be able to visit Fort Nepean and the open part of Point Nepean National Park, with its many walking trails and its history as a quarantine station and an army base. You may even find yourself heading out to the islands of Phillip Island and French Island. Whatever you choose to see and do, Mornington Peninsula is a destination away from the chaos you’ll leave behind, and a great place to spend your weekend.

FOOD AND WINE TOURS

The Mornington Peninsula is a prime destination for those looking to relax and enjoy the finer things in life, and to honour that way of life there are many different sight seeing tours of the Peninsula that incorporate both wine and food. Wineries dot the landscape offering up their products, and there are many fantastic eateries that are located in the seaside towns. Sorrento is another fine destination for cuisine, and most often tours will do at least one meal in the town.

These tours are often linked up with a visit to another luxurious destination. Along the Mornington Peninsula there are many different activities to try out, from motorcycle tours to a visit to nearby hot springs, from sea kayaking to horse riding. You can even head out for a relaxing sea cruise aboard a number of different vessels. Whichever you decide to do, definitely check out the food and wine in this weekend playground, as you travel up and down its beautiful coastline.

THINGS TO SEE AND DO

CULINARY TOURS

These tours are specifically designed for the gastro-fans in all of us; you’ll have access to a personal chef all day as you’re led around the Peninsula sampling the best that it has to offer. You’ll even be able to test out your skills in the cooking class afterward.

WATER ACTIVITIES

The Mornington Peninsula is attractively surrounded by water (as peninsulas are) and so a big part of what you’ll be doing here will involve the water. You can head out for a sailing adventure, do some kayaking, or even hit up the surf.

SOMEWHERE TO STAY

Melbourne is a stone’s throw away from the Mornington Peninsula, and staying there will be a cinch, since there are so many accommodations to choose from. If you want to stay in Melbourne, feel free to use our widget to the left in order to find the perfect accommodation for you. There’s a YHA in Sorrento if you prefer to stay for longer than just a day or so here, so the Peninsula can certainly be a place to stay as well.
