A two and a half hour flight from Perth, Broome is cosmopolitan town and one of Australia's beautiful holiday destinations. Complete with pristine white beaches, rich red outcrops and turquoise water, Broome is a popular holiday location. Broome is also the base to explore the spectacular and remote Kimberley.
Historically a pearling town, Broome is quite multicultural. Japanese, Filipino and Malay pearl divers arrived in droves early on seeking fortune in the pearls. Today, South Sea pearls are among the most coveted in the world. You can visit a pearl farm and see just how pearls are cultured. You can also see many on display in the shops around town.
Some popular sites include:
- Broome Crocodile Park: home to salt water crocodiles and Australian fresh water crocodiles.
- Cable Beach: the most famous beach in Brome, a beautiful place to relax and enjoy the sunshine. If your looking for a bit more excitement, camel rides are available!
- Dampier Peninsula: just north of Broome, offering red pindan cliffs, azure waters and a variety of flora and fauna. Several Aboriginal communities offer bush tucker walks and mud-crabbing tours.
- Dampier Terrace: admire two fully restored original pearling luggers and the restored and heritage listed Old Pearler’s
Quarters - Dutch Flying Boat Wrecks: 1km offshore from Town Beach the wrecks are visible, evidence of the Japanese WWII air raid. The Catalina Boat Wrecks are only visible at tides less than 0.86m.
- Gantheaume Point: you can see dinosaur footprints estimated at over 130 million years old! While your there, be sure to visit Anastasia’s Pool
- Minyirr Park: learn of the unique role that the Kimberley sea and river systems have played in the life of the local indigenous communities on a guided cultural walk and excursion. Walking trails available
- Rowley Shoals: 260 kilometres west of Broome on the edge of the Continental shelf, is one of the best diving areas in the world!
- Staircase to the Moon: for three days after the full moon from March to October, reflections stretch across the mudflats creating the illusion of a silver staircase.
