Karijini National Park

WA'S MOST SPECTACULAR PARK

Two billion years in the making, Karijini is believed by many to be the most spectacular park in Western Australia.  Karijini is one of WA’s largest national parks, and the second largest in Australia. Its gorges, chasms, creeks, waterfalls, and cool swimming holes make it a must-see when travelling in the area.

Home to many species of flora and fauna there is lots to see and plenty of space to see it in. Towering termite mounds are one feature of the landscape that you should be sure not to miss and the giant cathedral like piles are quite impressive to see. Be sure to pack swimming clothes as the permanent water pools mean there is always a chance to take a dip.

The most recommended way to experience Karijini is to hop on a four wheel drive tour. If tours aren’t your idea of a good time, you can also hire a vehicle and make your way to the park and explore at your own pace. A great system of walking trails will allow you to see all the magnificent sites, into gorges, through waterfalls, and up to rock pools.

  • Fortescue Falls, Circular Pool, and Fern Pool are three highlights of Dales Gorge.  The permanent waters offer a great place to cool off or have a picnic on the rocks. From Fortescue Falls turn right to Fern Pool or left for the three hour return walk to Circular Pool, one of the most picturesque places in the park.
  • Joffre Gorge Lookout Have a look into the gorge which forms a natural amphitheatre. After rain a waterfall forms.
  • Kalimina Gorge, gives visitors the opportunity to appreciate the amazing rock structure and colours within the Park.
  • Oxer Lookout is quite possibly the most stunning lookout in Australia. From here you can see the junction of 4 gorges.
  • Red, Weano, Joffre, and Hancock gorges allow you to appreciate the tremendous forces which tore the earth apart forming these fantastic gorges.
  • Weano Gorge is the best introduction to the bushwlks of Karijini. After a relatively easy walk down steps to the basin, you will meander between the layered rock walls and paperbark pools to Handrail Pool, a great spot for a swim. The more adventurous can carry on, though care should to be taken.
  • Red Gorge and Knox Gorge provide a dramatic insight into the forces of nature that shaped the earth.
  • Hancock Gorge is best appreciated with a local guide. After climbing down a ladder, you will wander into the gorge which narrows into a huge chamber of small rock pools and marbled walls.
  • Mt Bruce is WA’S second highest mountain. It is revered as one of the state’s most scenic walks offering fantastic views all the way up to its 1165 metre summit.

Camping facilities are located within the park allowing you to extend your stay so that you can see al that Karijini has to offer! Caravan, tent, bus, and generator sites are all available, but bookings and power is not available. Facilities include toilets and gas BBQs, but be sure to bring your own water and be aware that no open wood fires are permitted.
