With kilometres of amazing beaches, an endless summer and a relaxed environment, the Sunshine Coast is the perfect place to escape for the weekend. Only a short drive away from Brisbane, this region is both becoming a great place to live and a blossoming tourist destination. The coast begins in the south with the town of Caloundra, a town known for its seven surf spots and its beachfront cafes, with the Glass House Mountains providing a beautiful backdrop. Further north, the collective suburbs that make up Maroochy are proof that even suburban sprawl can still have a hip air about them. Finally, there’s the Noosa area, jam-packed with north-facing beaches, fantastic shopping, and enough biosphere in the national park to make any outdoor enthusiast happy. The Sunshine Coast is the perfect combination of coast and country. Finding your space in this fantastic part of Queensland will take no time at all.
Only twenty minutes from Caloundra is the amazing Australia Zoo, one of Australia’s top zoological destinations. Founded by Lyn and Bob Irwin in 1970, it was then handed down to premier wildlife celebrity and “Crocodile Hunter” Steve Irwin, who expanded the facility and made it his own. After Steve’s tragic passing in 2006, his wife Terri took over the family business, and today she and her daughter Bindi continue to help in the conservation and protection of animals.
The Australia Zoo may be unlike any other zoo you’ve ever seen; instead of a passive visit to the zoo, only looking at animals behind bars, you’ll be able to get up close and personal. This includes the Crocoseum, where you can see how saltwater crocodiles live and behave in the wild, the Tiger Temple, home to Sumatran and Bengal Tigers where you can also view them while they swim underwater, and the Wildlife Hospital, a lifeline for the many animals in the wild that have been injured – the staff rehabilitates and releases them back into the wild.
For the animal enthusiast in you, there’s no better place to visit than the Australia Zoo. Even though it may be a little bit out of the way in the Hinterland, buses are available to and from many spots up and down the Sunshine Coast.
There are many different ways to explore up and down the Sunshine Coast, whether by cruise, 4WD, motorcycle or tour bus. There is even a tour available by Segway! So go ahead and choose the right adventure tour for you.
Sure, Brisbane isn’t a far distance away, but why stay anywhere other than on the Sunshine Coast? There are many places to stay in the towns up and down the coastline, but consider staying in Noosa. There are an amazing amount of accommodations available, and even though it’s pretty far up north you can get to pretty much anywhere in this area.
