WOWWWW! I just went to the most incredible zoo I’ve ever been to: Featherdale Wildlife Park. I don’t even know if “zoo” is the right word for it! It was set up in an entirely different way than any other traditional “zoo” I’ve normally been to back in the States. You could literally walk through the animal exhibits (or they could walk around you), pet the kangaroos, pose with a koala, and get within feet of just about every other exotic Australian animal imaginable.
The first animals I saw were the wombats. For some reason, I found these stubby guys to be hilarious. They grunted and snorted as they wobbled around their habitat. Next up were wallabies, which would walk right out in front of our path! Great photo opp! [However, pictures don’t really do it justice!] My favourite part of the zoo was the big, open walking area full of kangaroos!!! These guys were bigger than the wallabies and had a lot more personality. Some were snoozin’ (must be stressful being a kangaroo at times), others were keeping their distance with their joeys, while others were hopping around right by us! As the journey through the wildlife park concluded, I saw an assortment of colourful birds, dingos, emus, bats, penguins, and crocodiles! It was so cool just to walk through and see the animals that are often only found in movies and magazines. And to think, just the other day, I was eating kangaroo and crocodile!
Needless to say, Featherdale Wildlife Park is a must see if you want to get up close and personal with some of the most iconic Australian animals. I’ve gone to a lot of zoos back in the States, but this was by far the most epic wildlife experience I’ve ever had.
