Despite how great Surfers Paradise looks in guide books, some Aussies complain about it being a tourist trap and advise travelers to avoid it completely. Those traveling up the east coast shouldn't let the critics deter them from this lively spot. Even though Surfers contains a lot of cheesy attractions and chain retail stores, it’s still a must-stop for backpackers looking for beautiful views, entertaining days and amazing night life.
Surf lesson at Go Ride a Wave
People backpacking up the east coast usually take a surf lesson long before Surfers Paradise. While There are heaps of places along the coast to learn, Surfers offers warm water and ideal waves for beginners. The staff at Go Ride a Wave is very helpful and patient. The shop offers deals on rentals after students complete a lesson as well as more advanced lessons.

There are several parks featuring public exercise equipment along the path. On the way back, complete a few repetitions at each equipment stop. Then cool off in the water with a quick swim.

The elevator alone is reason enough to visit this skyscraper. People will feel like their floating as they watch the digital floor numbers in the elevator escalate from level one to 77. Once at the top, patrons have a 360 view if the city, its beaches and waterways in a very posh environment. Spend some time looking around, then sip a cocktail while looking out at the best view in the city.

Scream at Dreamworld
Yes, it’s a theme park and that’s probably what the locals mean when they say “tourist trap,” but it’s fun. Plus, there are not many theme parks in Australia. So while this is not the most cultural experience, it’s something rare in the country. On top of that, the rides are as thrilling as Australia’s wildlife and with a population of 20 million, patrons don’t need to wait in long lines. Those seeking the biggest thrill at the park should head straight to The Giant Drop-great view, heavy anticipation, wild fall.
Hours: Daily, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Location: 1 Dreamworld Parkway Coomera. Phone: 07 5588 1111 Rates: $47-$75. www.dreamworld.
