Hospitality requirements

If you're after hospitality work you'll need a Responsible Service of Alcohol (RSA) certificate. To work with pokie machines (also called one-armed-bandits) or horse betting in pubs, you'll also need a Responsible Conduct of Gambling (RCG) certificate. Both certificates require a one-day training course and can be undertaken at training centres all over Australia, see the Jobs section of this website for more details.

The company recommended by THE WORD offering this training is:

COMSEC                                comsectraining.com.au

Another way to make good money in hospitality but perhaps not work all the late nights in bars and clubs is to become a 'barista' and make coffee instead.  Australians have the second highest coffee consumption (after Italians) in the Western World.  So there are plenty of jobs.

Nursing requirements

Nurses with overseas qualifications must register with the state Nurses Registration Board before working as a registered nurse. There is usually plenty of work available for nurses in capital cities.  Check out healthwork.com.au for job details and nmb.nsw.gov.au. City-based nursing agencies also arrange work in Aboriginal communities and remote locations.

TIP: Nursing agencies recommend that nurses from the UK stay registered with the RCN when they leave home. This automatically covers PII insurance while working in Australia.

Rural work: suggestions

Seasonal fruit picking work is widely available in Australia, as a large horticultural industry is established.  This work is popular when you want to do the three (3) months required for your 2nd visa.  But there is also plenty of other farm work, stock work, animal handling work available, if you just look alittle harder or get a little training.  Rural and farm work training company OutBackPackers is a great place to start your enquires, as is , which after a 5 day training course will find you a work placement.

If you are looking for a less traditional kind of rural work, WWOOF could be for you. Work on one of over 2000 properties in Australia. In exchange for four to six hours of work a day you will receive food, accommodation, and a unique way to experience Australia.
